The Wicked Tree by Kristin Thorsness

Publication Date:  October 8, 2019

Publisher:  Month9Books

Deep in the woods, a gnarled tree grows. Its thick, black trunk twists angrily up into the night sky. Held in place by the magic of a long-ago patriarch, it has waited centuries to lure a descendant into its trap.

When Tavorian Kreet and his mom move in with his great-grandmother, Tav is forbidden to go into the woods on the estate. But like most eleven-year-olds, he just can’t resist.

After secretly exploring the woods, Tav begins having dreams about a supernatural tree. Soon, the dreams change from pleasant to dark and menacing. On a dare, Tav ventures farther into the woods with his new friend, Harper. There, they meet a mysterious, mute boy named Edward who lives in a decrepit cabin nearby. Afraid, and unable to speak, Edward scrawls “Wicked Tree” on the ground.

Determined to help Edward, Tav enlists Harper, and they search the estate for clues to Edward’s identity and how to help him.

With Harper’s help, Tav pieces together the Kreet family history and discovers an ancient curse. If Tav wants to save his friends and family, he must go into the heart of the woods, find the Wicked Tree, and confront a most evil magic.

HE WICKED TREE, a MG dark fantasy that will appeal to fans of Jonathan Auxier’s THE NIGHT GARDENER and Mary Downing Hahn’s TOOK. If you love SERAFINA AND THE BLACK CLOAK, then THE WICKED TREE is for you!

My Review

This was such a fun, spooky mystery! I thought the characters were well written. The story was suspenseful and spooky with some humor too. I really enjoyed it!

My Review

If you like a dark, creepy and chilling read than The Tenth Girl is for you! I really liked the writing. I thought the story was unique. It has plenty of suspense and of course a huge twist.  I am going to say that this book does have a lot of trigger warnings. Please take precaution before reading this book. That being said I thought it was a great and unique horror read but it might not be for everyone.

My Favorite Quotes

Something in the atmosphere is wrong here, a something that I can’t articulate- I only feel a discomfort in the hollow of my chest, the same one that tells you you are not alone when you want to be, or that you are entirely alone when you shouldn’t be.

His face freezes in an unfinished expression of fear, as if some crucial bit of machinery has failed inside.

Where she could understand that the unknown isn’t to be feared- it’s to be carefully explored awe, if she is willing.

And lately Esme needs all the cash she can get, because it seems like destruction follows her wherever she goes. Let’s just say she owes some people a new tree.

Enter Cassandra Heaven. She’s Instagram-model hot, dresses like she found her clothes in a dumpster, and has a rebellious streak as gnarly as the cafeteria food. So why is Cassandra willing to do anything, even take on a potty-training two-year-old, to join Esme’s babysitters club?

The answer lies in a mysterious note Cassandra’s mother left her: “Find the babysitters. Love, Mom.”

Knowing she’ll be killed if she’s discovered, Rain purchases powder made from dragon magic that enables her to disguise herself as a boy. Then she hurries to the war camps, where she excels in her training—and wrestles with the voice that has taken shape inside her head. The voice of a dragon she never truly believed existed.

As war looms and Rain is enlisted into an elite, secret unit tasked with rescuing the High King, she begins to realize this dragon tincture may hold the key to her kingdom’s victory. My Review

The first thing that caught my attention about Stormrise was the cover. When I saw the dragon on the cover I knew I needed to read this book! I do try not to judge a book by its cover but I did this time and it worked out in my favor.  I really enjoyed reading Stormrise.

The writing is beautiful! I thought the world-building was good. The characters are all well written. There is plenty of action but too much action. There is also some romance. This book kind of reminded me of Mulan some, which made it even better.

I really enjoyed getting to see Rain grow throughout the book. The character development was great. I really liked the magic aspect and of course the dragons. It was just so interesting.

I really enjoyed reading Stormrise and I think everyone needs to pick up this wonderful fantasy!

All the Bad Apples

Moïra Fowley-Doyle

Published 1st August 2019

Penguin Paperback Original £7.99

ISBN 9780241333969

The new YA novel from Waterstones Children’s Book Prize- and Irish Book Award-shortlisted author Moïra Fowley-Doyle

Touching on the themes of abortion, illegitimate pregnancy, the tragedy of the Magdalen Laundries, rape and gay rights, All the Bad Apples is a powerful, haunting and unforgettable novel about silenced women in Ireland.

On Deena’s seventeenth birthday, the day she finally comes out to her family, her wild and mysterious sister Mandy is seen leaping from a cliff. The family is heartbroken, but not surprised. The women of the Rys family have always been troubled – ‘bad apples’, their father calls them – and Mandy is the baddest of them all.

But then Deena starts to receive the letters. Letters from Mandy, claiming that their family’s blighted history is not just bad luck or bad decisions, but a curse, handed down to the Rys women through the generations. Mandy has gone in search of the curse’s roots, and now Deena must begin a desperate cross-country hunt for her sister, guided only by the letters that mysteriously appear in each new place. What Deena finds will heal their family’s rotten past – or rip it apart forever.

Fowley-Doyle says: “All the Bad Apples is a book built of equal parts hope and fury – it’s about feminism and history, family and identity, and what happens when hidden truths are told. I wrote it as Ireland reeled from the findings of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, as grassroots feminist activists rallied to repeal the 8th amendment, and the rage felt by most of this country infused into a story about a teenage girl retracing her family tree and finding herself in its branches.”

My Review

This was such a powerful, beautiful, dark and haunting read. I just wanted to tell you this is book does talk about hard to read topics. The writing is beautiful. I liked the magical aspects of this book as well. I think this is a  book that everyone needs to read!

Favorite Quotes

That’s the problem with having a funeral for your sister without really knowing whether she’s dead. Without a body in the coffin, how can you be sure she won’t come back?

Once the curse comes to you, it doesn’t let go.

But I did. I didn’t have a choice. None of us did, all the bad apples.

Everything became this haunted darkness, this sharp cliff’s edge, there, right there, my bare feet toeing the line between ground and sky.

Advance Praise for All the Bad Apples

“Beautiful and visceral, All the Bad Apples is for readers who’ve had enough of shame and secrets. This essential book unearths what patriarchy wants to keep buried, dragging truth into the light with a fierce belief in the power of telling stories. Moïra Fowley-Doyle has crafted a tale devastating in its universality” – Joy McCullough, author of Blood Water Paint
