The Shadow Glass (The Bone Witch #3)
by Rin Chupeco
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: March 1st 2019
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult
The dramatic finale to The Bone Witch series! Tea’s dark magic eats away at her, but she must save the one she loves most, even while her life—and the kingdoms—are on the brink of destruction.
In the Eight Kingdoms, none have greater strength or influence than the asha, who hold elemental magic. But only a bone witch has the power to raise the dead. Tea has used this dark magic to breathe life into those she has loved and lost…and those who would join her army against the deceitful royals. But Tea’s quest to conjure a shadowglass, to achieve immortality for the one person she loves most in the world, threatens to consume her.
Tea’s heartsglass only grows darker with each new betrayal. Her work with the monstrous azi, her thirst for retribution, her desire to unmask the Faceless—they all feed the darkrot that is gradually consuming her heartsglass. She is haunted by blackouts and strange visions, and when she wakes with blood on her hands, Tea must answer to a power greater than the elder asha or even her conscience. Tea’s life—and the fate of the kingdoms—hangs in the balance.
Rin Chupeco’s Five Songs that remind her of Shadowglass
- Like Real People Do by Hozier
I had a thought, dear
About that night
The bugs and the dirt
Why were you digging
What did you bury
Before those hands pulled me from the earth?
The main song I found myself listening to for inspiration for the series. Hozier is scary-good at writing mood. This part in particular could have easily been about Tea burying (and then digging up) Kalen, but it could also refer to Tea also having to bury her dreams / any chances of a peaceful life the moment she decided she wanted to resurrect him. That idea is unspoken between them throughout the series, although they both understand that there’s no going back, and that until the end they’re going to love each other and carry on “like real people do”.
- Till We’re in the Sea by RKCB
Can we call it motion if the only thing that’s moving is our line
Drawn across the sand as if we’re sifting and adjusting space and time
‘Cause everything we know is just a story we’ve been told and keep repeating till we’re tired
But if we try, if we try
The Shadowglass talks a lot about the back and forth of politics, and how it sometimes feels like things are moving in the right direction only to discover that it’s just a lot of push and pull that might feel like there’s movement. Past-timeline Tea tried to go by the rules; present-time Tea has no effs to give.
- Duet by Penny and Sparrow
I bet your back can carry more than
Just the weight of your button-down
One by one, they’ll come undone
When we get home
I’ve seen you carry family
And all my insecurities
One by one, they’ll come undone
When we get home
This one’s a more personal look at Tea and Kalen’s commitment to each other. They’re intimate, and they physical aspect of their relationship is addressed throughout the book. But more than that is their devotion to each other, their admission that they carry each other’s burden at times (and manifested through the rune they share)
- Live Like a Warrior by Matisyahu
Today, today, live like you wanna
Let yesterday burn and throw it in a fire
In a fire, in a fire
Fight like a warrior
It applies very easily to both Tea and Fox. The song talks about feeling like the world is constantly against you, and while it’s very easy to give up, it’s even more important to fight on for what you believe in.
- Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands, and Landslide is my favorite song of theirs. It’s a song about changing and trying to love who you were in the past so you can also love who you can be in the future, and also love yourself during the period of transition between both. Tea is constantly waging a personal battle trying to believe that she deserves happiness despite the things she’d done, and the song nails that particular anguish.
Despite an unsettling resemblance to Japanese revenants, Rin always maintains her sense of hummus. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. Dances like the neighbors are watching.
She is represented by Rebecca Podos of the Helen Rees Agency. She is also fond of speaking in the third person, and may as well finish this short bio in this manner. While she does not always get to check her Goodreads page, she does answer questions posed to her here as promptly as she is able to.
